President's Report

Well, that’s a wrap! 2020 is finally behind us and I’m sure like most of you, I’m going to choose to leave it behind us. Before we do, I’d like to once again thank our board members. As I had mentioned previously, with operations shutting down for a significant portion of 2020 including certifications, lunch seminars, and our annual golf tournament, the decision was made to roll forward everyone’s commitment to the board for another year. Unfortunately for you guys, you ended up stuck with me and long-winded newsletters for another year! The board has continued to meet every couple of months to monitor finances and see what few operations can be performed in the midst of this global pandemic. As you’ve seen by the barrage of emails, our certifications program has been up and running and the backlog from all the cancelled certifications are largely caught up! A huge thanks to Steve Campbell, Heather Caya, and our certifications group for making that possible. Other than that, I can’t really find a good reason to dwell on the past, so let’s look forward with the optimism of what 2021 can bring.

Our certifications program is continuing to remain busy and it is currently the lifeblood of our organization. You no doubt have seen the emails popping up with certification opportunities as they come available. Despite everything being shut down, that is one thing that we’ve been able to continue to do in an outdoor, safe, and socially distanced manner and that will continue going forward. We’re hopeful that we will one day be able to resume our monthly lunch seminars at Stone Brewery in Liberty Station. In the meantime, we have decided to move forward with virtual seminars – the first of which will be a joint seminar with SEAOSD featuring Michelle Wilson of the Portland Cement Association, Chair of ACI Committee 301, speaking on the changes in the new ACI 301-20: Specifications for Structural Concrete. Beyond that, we are putting together seminars relevant to the concrete industry today including the use of slag in concrete and the availability of fly ash and cement in the Socal region. Stay tuned for the email blasts regarding those events and hopefully soon, these seminars will be in person.

Also, save the date! Our annual golf tournament will be returning to Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos on October 4, 2021. Tee times all across the county are in short supply as it seems like everyone has gotten bitten by the golf bug – make sense, I guess, it’s one of the few things that are open for us to do! All that means is that we’re expecting a great turnout and less errant golf shots. Maybe it’s time to get rid of those “mulligans”? With all the golf being played, they may no longer be necessary! I know it’s a long ways away, but we are definitely looking forward to that after missing you all last year.

Last, but not least, May is typically when we have a changing of the guard and we usher out the Board Members that have served their terms and bring in new blood to replace them. Typically, this would be done at our annual ACI San Diego Awards Banquet, but with everything going on, the Board has decided to push the Awards Banquet to 2022. However, I do not plan on serving a third year as ACI San Diego Chapter President, and you all should not have to endure that punishment, so I encourage you to consider serving on the ACI Board. If you want to know what we do, want to understand the time commitment, or are interested, please contact Heather Caya at [email protected].

One of these days, hopefully later in 2021, events and gatherings will be allowed once again and I promise you, even if I’m no longer ACI Chapter President by then, I will make sure we throw one big happy hour party to celebrate together as the San Diego Concrete Industry. Until then, I hope you and your loved ones continue to stay safe and we look forward to the day we can gather again.
