President's Report

It’s almost unbelievable that we are already in the 4th quarter of 2018. Luckily we live in an area of the world where concrete is essentially unaffected by weather.

The ACI Golf Tournament was a huge success again this year and was sold out for the 4th year in a row! Thank you to all who participated as a sponsor, participant, and or volunteer. Our Golf Tournament helps support the Chapter and underwrites our Annual Awards Event, monthly seminars, local scholarships and much more.

Also this month the ACI Fall Convention was held in Las Vegas. Members from all across the globe came together for a week of education, collaboration, networking, etc. Congratulations to the ACI Las Vegas Chapter for putting on a remarkable convention! During the convention, the 2018 Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards Gala was held. Awards were given to various concrete projects from all over the world. It was fascinating to see all the great projects utilizing concrete in so many different ways. The highest honor was presented to the Viaduct Over River Almonte in Garrovillas de Alconétar, Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain.

Speaking of great concrete projects, we are now accepting project nominations for our Awards Banquet! If you have been a part of a project that you feel deserves to be recognized, please submit an application. Our committee strives to recognize excellence and innovation for the use of concrete as the premier architectural/structural building material. We will accept nominations for the following categories:

On November 13th  we will have a lunch seminar on the Oroville Emergency Recovery Spillways Project with an emphasis on the use of roller compacted concrete on the project. Our speaker, Joe Burke, is a Senior Engineer in the California Department of Water Resources with over 18 years of experience in the engineering and construction industry. We are looking forward to his participation. Please also keep in mind that almost all of our seminars have CEU credits available! Let us know if you need them.

World of Concrete is right around the corner. It will be held from January 22nd-25th in Las Vegs, NV. ACI offers $20 exhibits–only admission online (some restrictions may apply) and discounted seminars to World of Concrete—the industry’s largest annual education, exhibition, and certification event. I want to take a moment to congratulate Mike Serra on being elected an ACI Fellow of the Institute! A Fellow is an individual who has made “outstanding contributions to the production or use of concrete materials, products, and structures in the areas of education, research, development, design, construction, or management.” Mike has made tremendous contributions to our local San Diego Chapter and to ACI. Thank you, Mike, for everything you have done and we are all proud to know you. Congratulations!

Thanks,

Justin Hill
