Wall Innovations Utilized in the Mid-Coast Trolley and LOSSAN Corridor Rail Projects

The LOSSAN (Los Angeles to San Diego) rail corridor is the second busiest intercity rail corridor in the nation supporting commuter, intercity, and freight rail services. The San Diego LOSSAN rail improvements and Mid-Coast Trolley projects include adding 3 new rail lines.  One heavy rail for Amtrak, Union Pacific and BNSF heavy rail freight services, and two light rail tracks for commuter trains for a total of 4 tracks along the corridor. 

Several traditional retaining walls planned for the project were replaced with Precast Concrete Counterfort Walls, which have been around for over 40 years, but are recently becoming more popular because of their cost savings, speed of construction, strength and diverse aesthetic options.  The presentation will provide information on five large precast counterfort retaining walls that were designed and constructed for the project, including some of the design challenges, and potential future research that can be done to further verify and possibly improve the design.

Erick J. Aldrich and Jeremy Kirkpatrick with SRK Engineering

Erick Aldrich, RCE, GE, PE
Mr. Aldrich has been a registered Civil Engineer in California since 1997, and a registered Geotechnical Engineer since 2001.  He is also a registered Professional Engineer in Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Hawaii.  He obtained his undergraduate degree from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and his graduate degree from California State University, Long Beach. 

Mr. Aldrich has been providing geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, construction engineering, materials testing and inspection, and expert witness consulting services for over 25 years.  He has an extensive range of experience on various types of projects including private, public works, commercial, industrial, school, medical, military, railroads, residential, commercial, highways, slope stabilization, pipelines and coastal projects.  Mr. Aldrich obtained his ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1 certification in 1994, and has extensive experience in sampling and testing of reinforced concrete materials.


Jeremy Kirkpatrick, PE
Mr. Kirkpatrick is a registered Civil Engineer, Qualified SWPPP Developer, Certified Welding Inspector and Certified Safety Trained Supervisor.  He has been in the construction industry as a Project Manager and Construction Engineer for over 12 years.  He has previously worked for some of the region’s largest and most reputable heavy civil public works contractors, and now is the co-owner of SRK Engineering, with offices in San Diego, Escondido and Santa Ana.  He obtained his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego. 

Mr. Kirkpatrick has worked on many large projects including, Lake Skinner Treatment Plant, San Vicente Dam Pump Station and Pipelines, State Route 76 Widening, Taxiway C at the San Diego Airport, Southline Freight Improvements, and currently the Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project and Orange County Street Car project.  Mr. Kirkpatrick has extensive experience in managing the design and construction of reinforced concrete structures and precast concrete materials.
